Bonus Weekend opens with a BANG... and a FLASH

Sat, 23/06/2012 - 2:49 pm

Early morning it looked like Mother Nature would be kind on the first day of Silver Star’s 2012 Bonus Weekend, however it didn’t last long.

At 10:45 a.m. the first lightening crack was spotted and the Resort had to clear and shut down the Comet Six-pack lift until the thunder and lightning had cleared the area. “ Lightening closures are nothing new to the bike park in summer time but for all the keen mountain bikers chomping at the bit to get out and ride lift access downhill it was an exercise in patience.” Commented Ian Galbraith, Summer Business Manager at Silver Star.

Essentially, lightning is a gigantic electrical spark that results from billions of volts of natural static electricity, It is usually associated with thunderstorms and rain and most lightning strikes average 2 to 3 kilometers long and carry a current of 10,000 Amps at 100 million Volts.” Continued Galbraith. This explains why the chairlifts were cleared and shut down as quickly as possible. Guests were transported back to the village via bus.

Overall, everyone was in high spirits and very excited to be back riding the bike park.  “We noticed a lot of dirt caked grins on every trail”, noted Cam Sorensen, Silver Star bike park director.  Sorenson added that the bike park has “quite a bit” more snow hanging around at the top of the mountain than this time last year.

Almost all the trails were open for the Bonus Weekend with a few exceptions where the ground was too soft for biking.  Luckily with the resort closing down for Monday to Friday it gives Trail Crew time to get the few closed trails open and ready for full operations opening on Friday June 29.

Despite being forced to close the lifts twice on opening day mountain bikers were in high spirits and having a great time playing in the muddy trails.  The mountain bike spirit was definitely not tarnished due to the rain which was proven by a pack of roughly six bikers all clad in black garbage bags for riding.

Silver Star Bike Park will reopen June 29, 2012 for seven days a week operations until September 9 and then reopen for an end of season Bonus Weekend on September 15 & 16.  Make sure you check out the exciting lineup of events at Silver Star this summer including Elevate Mountain Bike Camp hosted by Matt Hunter, Thomas Vanderham and Graham Agassiz, BC Cup race #4 on July 21 & 22 and Freeride Festival August 25 & 26.  As well Silver Star has started NEW non-mountain bike activities this summer like Frisbee golf and Geocaching.
