Operation Food Drive
Nov. 13/2009 - The goal is simple. Silver Star will raise as much money and food as possible for the Salvation Army Food Bank starting next Saturday.
On November 21 and 22, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Silver Star will set up shop in front of:
• Vernon Square Safeway
• Save-On-Foods in the Village Green Mall
• Cooper's Foods at its 43rd Avenue location
Michael Sherwood, general manager of Silver Star, said recent stories in the media of the food bank's troubles keeping the shelves stocked prompted staff to develop the concept.
"We came together and decided this is a chance to make an immediate impact on the community," noted Sherwood. "Any donation, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated."
Anyone who makes a donation of $20 in cash, or the equivalent in non-perishable food items, will receive a free lift ticket, good for either the Saturday, Nov. 28 or the Sunday, Nov. 29, the resort's tentative opening weekend.
Silver Star will also be on hand for the Vernon Downtown Association's annual Light Up festivities slated for November 27.
"We know Vernon is a very generous community and to encourage more donations the idea of a lift ticket for a $20 donation seems like a natural fit,” said Sherwood.
For season pass holders, Sherwood said Silver Star would set up shop in the village on opening weekend to accept donations. For pass holder who donates $20 or the equivalent in non-perishable food items, their name will go in a draw to win a 2010/11 season pass.
Sherwood said Silver Star is still working on adding one more location in Vernon.
"We want to reach as many people as possible. Christmas is a special time of the year and we hope our efforts will relieve the pressures some families may be in at this time of the year."
