Record Numbers for $5 Fridays at Silver Star and Big white Resorts

Wed, 25/01/2006 - 12:00 am

Making skiing and snowboarding affordable is a huge issue in the winter sports industry, and Big White and Silver Star Resorts have taken the lead in attracting a new clientele.

For the past several years, both Big White and Silver Star have hosted $5 Fridays in which tickets for night skiing are reduced from $24.00 to $5 for over four hours of skiing between 3:30 and 8:00 pm at Big White and 9:00 pm at Silver Star. With the best mid-winter snow conditions in several years, both resorts have seen over a thousand participants which are record numbers for $5 Fridays.

It's important to note that night skiing trails and terrain at both resorts are exceptional – the Bullet Chairlift at Big White and the Summit Chairlift at Silver Star provide access to over a thousand vertical feet of skiing – bigger than, say, most resorts in Ontario! At Big White, TELUS Park is lit for night sessions in the halfpipe, boardercross course, and terrain park features.

"The enormous success of $5 Fridays has proven to us that there remains a huge number of skiers and riders who are interested in coming to our resorts," commented Michael J. Ballingall, Senior Vice-President for Big White and Silver Star. "We are researching ways in which we can offer these new participants a high-value skiing and snowboarding experience on a more frequent, on-going basis. In the meantime, we're happy to announce that $5 Fridays will continue right through the BC Schools Break in March."

That's not all. Both Big White and Silver Star have had very attractive school programs to encourage greater snowsports participation by Okanagan students. The schools program has been in operation for over thirty years, and the lift, lesson, and rental packages have not gone up in price for the past ten seasons. Over fifty seven schools in the Vernon and North Okanagan region now take part at Silver Star while at Big White, the schools program takes place at night with supervised coach transportation from local schools to the mountain.
