After two days of qualifying and training in difficult weather, the sun broke free just in time for the first racer in North America’s longest running recreational downhill ski race, Silver Star’s Over the Hill Downhill (OTHDH).
The 2012 edition drew a smaller number yet more diverse field of 104 skiers from around the globe aged 24 to 77 years all squeezing into their lycra speed suits and donning the long skis for the thrill of feeling like one of the Crazy Canucks.
This annual event prides itself on safety and fun in an environment where your fellow competitors are more likely to give you pointers on how to go just that little bit faster.
The overall winning team this year was “The Lazy Canucks” Murray Smith, Marty Steele, Brent Ree, and Jen Stew with a combined team time of 4:54:30. In an interesting turn of events the fastest time on the day was shared by former Canadian National Ski Team member Steve Hatch and American Luke Keenan with a time of 1:11:43 and in third place was Murray Smith with a time of 1:11:45.
The quickest lady down the track was Leslie Allan-Reed from Abbotsford with a time of 1:15:95, second from Vernon was Francesca Van Soest with a time 1:16:01 and in third Melanie Roberts from Kamloops with a time of 1:16:40
The Canadian Masters Downhill run on the same course after the OTHDH event saw Luke Kennan from Seattle post the fastest time of the day with a 1:11:22 and Hannole Sundberg posted the fastest time for the women at 1:19:03.
David Poggemiller from Canaccord Wealth Management, the title sponsor of the event, said “That was a hoot! Can I go again!?!” We all hope so David…but it will have to wait until next year.
