SNOW IS HERE AND THE TRAILS ARE GROOMED. SILVER STAR MOUTAIN RESORT OPENS FOR XC SKIING NOVEMBER 11, 2011
VERNON, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Nov 11, 2011 – Thanks to Ullr being very generous in the Okanagan, Silver Star Mountain Resort will be opening 20 kilometres of groomed upper trails on November 11 for both classic and skate skiing. With 25 centimetres already blanketing the summit and more snow in the forecast, the team at Silver Star are confident that November 11 will be an auspicious start to the season. Temperatures currently sit just below the minus mark, tickets at 50% off, and the wind is calm – perfect conditions to get those XC skis waxed and out on the trails.
“We are so lucky to need such little snow to begin grooming,” explains Silver Star’s Nordic Manager, Guy Paulsen. “I’ve been out there myself assisting with the rolling of the trails and I can’t wait to click into my skis and start gliding.”
Here are just a few reasons to check out Silver Star’s Nordic program this winter:
Become a XC pro with the Weekend Warrior camps. These include 2.5 hours of instruction, video analysis, trail passes, lunch and a fitness centre pass this two-day package starting at $219 will put you through your paces. Or if you want to “Go The Distance”, for a 4-day stretch this package includes the above, plus yoga and stretch sessions, and 2 massages. Prices start at $639 for 4 days.
NEW! LUNAR LOPPET SERIES – RACING UNDER THE MOON
Racing by moonlight is Silver Star’s new Nordic offering, with three events spread out over the winter season. Here’s the rundown: Feb 7- XC Classic Race, Mar 8 – XC Skate Race and April 6 – Hill Climb Race. A full moon occurs when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth than the sun. It catches the full illumination of the sun, which makes it appear completely round to the naked eye. It also kindly lights the Nordic trails at Silver Star, so pull on your ski boots and get a bit lunar loopy at the loppet series.
SILVER STAR 75 NORDIC FESTIVAL
If you thought that marathon season was over until the sun came back out then you’re mistaken. The Nordic Festival spans the weekend of Feb 18 and 19, and includes five different events. This has been a Silver Star tradition since 2001, and attracts over 200 people each year. On Saturday there are options for beginners and families all the way up to the pros, in both classic and skate ski. Start with the 7.5km tour, attempt the 37.5 half marathon, or go the distance and complete 75km of race. On Sunday try the Hill Climb event, or tackle the Snowshoe race. After each event contestants and spectators can revel in a post race social at the Saloon.
Silver Star boasts one of the most impressive Nordic trail systems in North America, with over 60 kilometres of their own immaculately groomed runs, which can be combined with nearby Sovereign Lakes, extending this to an impressive 105 kilometres. Unlike other resorts, where the trails are a car or bus ride out of town, Silver Star’s Nordic trails can be accessed from the village – ski in/ski out. With an average temperature of 23 degrees Fahrenheit, local enthusiasts joke about only needing “blue wax all season.” Day passes for the trails are $21 for an adult, with rental starting at $22 per day.
