The Winter, 2005 issue of Ski Canada magazine featuring 'Best of Skiing in Canada' awards has hit the newsstands, and Silver Star and Big White resorts have come out on top in several key categories!
The annual Ski Canada awards recognize the unique qualities of the Canadian ski experience. More than just statistics, the 'Best of Skiing in Canada' award categories are developed from the personal experiences of Ski Canada contributors and editorial personnel looking for the highest, the newest, the most excellent and, yes, even the funniest characteristics of Canada's ski resorts. The 'Best of Skiing in Canada' awards are a highlight of the season for readers and are 'most quoted' by ski areas. This year, both mountains were cited for excellence in the following categories.
Best Aerial View of the Monashee Mountains – "Available any time you've launched off any of the big-air ramps at Silver Star's new Airstyle park."
Best Place to Take Your Nordic Skiing Significant Other: "Should the love of your life favor skinny skiing on immaculately groomed cross country tracks while you prefer to plow the pow, then you can't beat Silver Star."
Best Place to Learn from the Pros: "Silver Star's new Ski Academy is designed for instructors and other ski professionals who want to take both their skiing and their job seriously."
Best Place to find the Red Mountain Experience if you're in the Okanagan: "Silver Star's Powder Gulch Chair services literally dozens of named and unnamed double black diamond chutes, gullies and glades. There are trails there that only locals ever ski. Psst! Alder Point may be the best undiscovered ski run in Canada."
Best New Lifts - Cliff Chair
Best New Terrain Park: TELUS Park – a nod to Big White’s dedication to skier cross, New School skiing, and slopestyle.
Best New Intermediate Terrain: "Big White's Gem Lake expansion includes six new intermediate runs and almost 80 hectares of blue runs, which should please the masses."
"We’re going to have to find more room above the fireplace. The mantle is getting filled up with these awards," commented Michael J. Ballingall, Vice-President for Silver Star and Big White resorts. "As always, it’s great to be recognized by Canada’s largest-circulation skiing publication and the contributors who write for it."
In 2004, Silver Star won a Best of Skiing in Canada award for Best Use of God-Given Vertical, while Big White received awards for Best Non-Skiing Family Destination, Best High-Speed Cruising, and Most Accessible Powder. Both resorts were cited (as was the Kelowna International Airport) for Quickest Delivery to the Slopes. Both resorts have been cited on numerouls occassions as the Best Family Resort in Canada.
Earlier this year, Big White’s Sun Rype Bowl was named one of the world’s Top 84 Ski Runs by Great Britain’s Daily Mail skiing magazine, and garnered several "Perfect" awards from Ski Press magazine as well.
