Santa Claus has come early for skiers and snowboarders at the north Okanagan’s favourite ski resort! The black diamond trails of some of Silver Star Mountain Resort’s gnarliest terrain will be tamed with the arrival of our new Bombardier BR 350 winch cat. Santa Claus says, “it’s was kind of bulky to fit into the bag, and I had to leave it in the middle of the village because it wouldn’t fit down the chimney.”
The all-new BR 350 has been designed by Bombardier’s snow grooming team for the specific challenges, terrain, and snowfall patterns experienced by North American ski resorts. Power to the tracks is supplied by a 345 horsepower electronic diesel engine that produces over 1100 foot-pounds of torque. The BR 350 can race (or crawl, in this case) down the slopes at a speedy 18.5 kilometres per hour! Equipped with Bombardier’s Tower Winch, hydraulically-operated Terrain Master blades and tiller, the BR 350 is the ultimate grooming and snow-moving system. The winch attachment allows grooming to occur on slopes of up to 40 degrees (80 percent) – perfect for the “double black diamond” territory in Powder Gulch/Putnam Creek.
The benefits to recreational skiers are obvious as soon as they start descending a freshly-groomed expert slope. Norman Kreutz, Silver Star’s Director of Snowsports, says that “the winch cat has changed the way a mountain is skied or snowboarded, since it affords the average rider the opportunity to blaze a trail down runs that they would normally not venture onto. Grooming a black diamond run to a smooth, consistent surface improves their sense of confidence. The mountain is opened up to a wider range of skiers and riders.” Before you start your ski day, check the “Grooming Report” to see which one of your favourite black diamonds have received the ‘winch cat treatment’ from the Silver Star grooming crew!!
