Prepare for your Heli-Skiing Adventure

A great way to make sure you are ready to get the most out of your heli-skiing adventure is to take a ‘Powder Prep’ lesson with the Silver Star Snowsport School where you will learn what to do a little different with wide powder skis under foot, gain confidence skiing glades and steep terrain, and get an idea of what you can expect from the helicopter and guide experience. Of course if you love the work your Ski Pro is doing they would be more than appreciative for you to take them along so they can continue the lesson in the big mountains!

Cancellations

Sometimes, poor weather will mean a “no fly” day on your scheduled heli-ski day. EPH will wait until mid-day to call the day a “no fly” day. If it is simply a weather delay, once the safety briefing is complete, skiers will hit the slopes of Silver Star and be picked up on the mountain once the weather clears. Here are the options when inclement weather prevents skiing:

  • Full refund or full credit towards heli-skiing at another date if the decision is made by Eagle Pass based on poor weather or avalanche conditions.
  • If the decision to not ski is made after your morning safety briefing, you will receive a full refund less a $100 administration fee. You will be provided a bagged lunch and a day lift ticket to enjoy Silver Star Mountain Resort. EPH will usually hold off until 1130 AM to call a day a “no fly” day.
  • If you wish to cancel your reservation with Eagle Pass Heliskiing, this must be done so at a minimum of 24 hours prior to your arrival; otherwise you will be charged the full amount on your credit card.
  • If you start skiing but the guaranteed number of runs is not reached, EPH will refund at a rate of $100 plus tax for each run not skied.
  • No refund is offered to guests who do not complete their package due to poor skiing ability, fitness, illness or injury.

General Booking Conditions and Refund Policies

All rates are in Canadian Funds and are subject to all applicable taxes. A $400.00 deposit per person, per day (non refundable in case of cancellations) and a credit card number is required to confirm your reservation. All participants will be required to read and sign a waiver form prior to skiing departure. This form is available on the Eagle Pass website. Final payment is due 30 days prior to skiing date. Travel Insurance is strongly recommended.

Trip Cancellation Insurance - We recommend you purchase Trip Cancellation Insurance. This may be purchased through your Travel Agent, or we can recommend an insurance company who offers this type of trip cancellation insurance. Please be sure that you are covered and are familiar with our cancellation policy.

Snow Safety and Terrain

Guides meet twice daily to develop a stability forecast prior to skiing and evaluation of the day once the skiing is completed. Guides based at Silver Star will work in conjunction with our EPH morning and afternoon meetings at Mulvehill Creek Lodge. Both ski programs will summarize their skiing day and this information will be documented in-house, and then shared through the InfoEx Information exchange service hosted through the CAA.

Guest Briefing

All guests are required to sign a waiver prior to heliskiing. They will also be trained on how to use avalanche transceivers, rescue techniques and protocol, and how to use the radio to call for help in the unlikely event of an accident. They are also given a helicopter safety briefing by the pilot to ensure their actions around the helicopter are safe. They are also shown how to exit the machine should there be an emergency.

Communication

All guests will have radios in their guest packs in case of emergency. Guides and pilots will also have handheld radios, plus the helicopter will be equipped with both UHF and VHF frequencies. All dispatch will go through EPH main office at Mulvehill Creek Lodge with ½ hour check ins, and/or call ins when the machine is changing location. The helicopter is also equipped with satellite tracking, and an ELT (Emergency Location Transmitter) Eagle Pass presently has two repeaters that cover our skiing areas. There is also always a satellite phone with each skiing group as well as in the helicopter.

Safety and Guides

The safety of their clients is the most important concern at Eagle Pass Heliskiing both on the snow and in the air.
They are proud members of HeliCat Canada, a governing body with world renowned guidelines for operating procedures and safety standards in the British Columbia Helicopter ski/board industries.

Guides at Eagle Pass are fun and devoted mountain professionals. All Guides are certified members of their respected Associations; ACMG (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides), CSGA (Canadian Ski Guides Association), CAA (Canadian Avalanche Association). In-house training such as on-mountain rescue and first aid courses occur throughout the year. All EPH guides attend yearly Continued Professional Development sessions presented and hosted by industry leaders. All guides go through annual training at the start of every season. This includes:

  • Rescue Plan Review and Practice (Rope, Crevasse, Avalanche)
  • Media Response Plan and Protocol
  • Wildlife Stewardship and Mitigation
  • All EPH staff participate in rescue simulation

Ability Level

It is recommend that you are at least an advanced skier/boarder and don’t mind venturing off the groomed slopes on powder days at the resort. Most slopes are between 20 and 40 degrees, and when conditions allow and with the right group, you will hit steep slopes. If you have fun skiing runs like Gypsy Queen and Sunny Ridge on a powder day or can’t get enough of runs like Chute 5, Holy Smokes, and Attridge then you are ready to heli-ski.
